Hand fractures punish imprecise hardware. The metacarpals and phalanges are short, the fragments are small, and the extensor tendons glide directly over the bone, so a plate that is too thick or too wide quickly turns into stiffness. Implants for the hand have to be designed for the hand, at a scale that respects both the bone and the soft tissue around it.
The small bone locking plate range answers with straight plates for shaft fractures and eccentric geometries that place screws where periarticular fragments leave room for them. Locking holes give fixed-angle hold in cancellous bone that offers little thread purchase. As always in hand trauma, fracture assessment and the decision between plate, screw or conservative treatment rest with the operating surgeon.
