The dorsal rim of the distal radius fails in fragments, not in straight lines. A marginal fragment here, a crushed segment of the articular margin there — and a narrow plate that covers only part of the rim leaves the rest of the joint edge without support. The geometry of the implant has to answer the geometry of the injury.
The triangular head widens toward the joint and places locking screws across the breadth of the dorsal margin, so the rim is supported at multiple points along its width. Because the extensor tendons pass directly over this surface, the plate keeps a low profile and a contour that follows the dorsal anatomy. The plate is seated on the dorsal cortex with the wide end of the triangular head at the joint margin.
