Volar marginal fractures are among the more demanding distal radius injury patterns. The fragment is small, sits at the joint line and carries the insertion of strong ligaments, so it displaces easily and is poorly controlled by plates whose distal row ends proximal to the rim. Missed or unstable marginal fragments are a recognized cause of post-traumatic wrist instability.
A plate shaped for the volar rim places its distal screws where the fragment actually lies, giving fixed-angle support right at the joint margin. Short versions act as fragment-specific buttresses, while long versions continue along the radial shaft when the fracture line extends proximally. The choice of plate length and screw configuration remains with the operating surgeon.
