The volar rim distal radius locking plate is designed for marginal fragments at the volar edge of the distal radius — fracture lines that run distal to the seating area of a standard volar plate. Volar marginal fractures are among the more demanding distal radius injury patterns. Missed or unstable marginal fragments are a recognized cause of post-traumatic wrist instability.
A plate shaped for the volar rim places its distal screws where the fragment actually lies, giving fixed-angle support right at the joint margin. Short versions act as fragment-specific buttresses, while long versions continue along the radial shaft when the fracture line extends proximally.
