The lateral distal tibia plate covers the lateral column of the distal tibia, complementing the medial and anterior plates in the distal tibia family. It is stocked in a locking version, whose distal screws thread into the plate at fixed angles toward the lateral plafond, and a conventional version with compression holes for sound bone. Both are precontoured to the anterolateral flare of the distal tibia and manufactured separately for the left and the right leg, with hole counts running from four to twenty. Lateral Distal Tibia Plate — Sizes, Versions and Data

The lateral side of the distal tibia is the third plating surface around the ankle. A lateral plate buttresses the lateral column of a pilon-type injury, supports Chaput-type fragments at the syndesmosis, and gives the surgeon an anterolateral corridor when the medial soft tissues are too compromised for a medial plate. Its distal screw cluster is angled toward the lateral plafond so the joint surface is supported from the lateral side.

Choosing between the locking and the conventional version follows the same logic as elsewhere around the ankle: fixed-angle screws where the distal fragment is small or the bone weak, compression holes where bone quality permits. The locking version concentrates its range in the shorter and middle lengths used around the joint, while the conventional version extends to the longest plates for fracture lines reaching up the shaft. The operating surgeon decides the version and the plate length at templating.

Product Details

At surgery the plate is seated on the anterolateral surface of the distal tibia with the distal cluster above the joint line, so its screws pass into the lateral plafond without entering the ankle. The shaft runs up the lateral cortex and is fixed according to the hole type and version. K-wire holes hold the plate provisionally while reduction is checked. The approach, the version and the screw plan are decided by the operating surgeon.
